💁‍♀️✨Why is sunset the most flattering time of day to take photos? 🧪#science #physics

🧪You can thank a phenomenon called “Raleigh Scattering:”

🧪When the sun is lower in the sky, it has to pass through a thick layer of the earth’s atmosphere, scattering shorter wavelengths (blue and violet) and allowing more of the longer wavelengths to pass through (red, orange, yellow) - aka “Raleigh Scattering,” which is why 30-60 minutes before sunset is called “golden hour.”

🌾These gold tones evoke a nostalgic, romantic, and emotional vibe, which is why I love photos taken at golden hour so much! ☀️ (🧪About ~2800-4000k color temperature is coming from the light source or similar to tungsten/incandescent/candle light, 🧪NOTE: your camera white balance will be set differently! Maybe ~6000-7000k or “cloudy” mode)

🌅 On top of the color tones being warm and flattering, the light is softer which is more flattering (less harsh shadows).

🌀30-60 mins after sunset is called “blue hour” (🧪the duration of blue hour depends on your geographical latitude, time of year, and atmospheric conditions.) As the longer wavelengths (red/orange) are less affected by Raleigh Scattering, the rich blue tones of the sky contribute to an overall blue hue (🧪between 9000-12000k color temperature coming from the ambient light source, but a ~4000-5000k camera or “fluorescent” setting will be flattering).

Also… our faces are less puffy in the morning than at night (fluid hangs out in our faces while we sleep!), hence another reason why I prefer sunset over sunrise (and I’m 10000% not a morning person 🧛‍♀️).

Super stoked for what lies ahead. I’ve been getting into editorial/fashion lighting lately and starry night photos, as well as more of a moody yet brighter vibe. Loving capturing tender candid moments as well as helping to curate moments of connection, joy, and self-confidence. 🫶

My future goals are to incorporate more drone shots and double exposures into my sessions! 🛫🔀 and of course to chill tf out, drink water, take days off, hang out with people I love, bake a keto pumpkin pie from scratch, and protect my noggin from more concussions iykyk
